Call to arms
I need help. As any other human being i benefit from external ideas and inputs, hence the reason behind this blog.
Currently being in different countries makes this endeavor a bit harder, but his family is amazing and they're willing to help with experiments ❤️.
My friend doesn't have many options to communicate, only his left eye, shaking no with the head and some partial movement of the left arm/hand.
Some nuisances:
- He can only control and see from his left eye, the right one doesn't help
(yet, hope will always accompany us).
Unfortunately -while he can often control blinking- he's also plagued by involuntary blinking, leaving this type of communication hard to interpret. - Moving the head is physically taxing, movements are very subtle.
In certain occasions (tired i guess) communication has to resort to this, as the eyes have too many involuntary movements to correctly identify a "yes". - He can feel and seldom move the fingers with some degree of accuracy.
Sometimes he can even move the arm -to everyone's surprise- but my best guess is that they're not fully voluntary movements yet.
They look like muscles overreacting to nerve stimuli, which is probably good news as it could be the brain rewiring itself to support this new "configuration".
Having said that, IANAD.
During his stay in the hospital he's undergoing physical therapy in various forms, as his immobility forces him on bed 24/7.
Among other tests, he just started having one eye covered at a time, to aid his brain rediscover the right eye.
I also witnessed a couple of other tests to assess his recovery the last time i visited him, such as:
- pushing with an arm (only the left one slightly worked)
- moving the tongue
- following a moving finger in front of his face (failed with the right one)
Given the above conditions the options for AAC are limited, but as I said before: hope will accompany us.
I prefer to split articles with various topics, this one was a summary of his current status at the time of writing.
